Beyond RF: Steve’s Cabin

If you have visited the New Hams Net you know Steve KI6LOV. But did you know Steve is an avid hiker? Read on and learn.

I would like to share a very special place that has been part of my life for the past forty-nine years.  My cabin lies within the Angeles National Forest, San Gabriel Mountains. There is no access road.  One parks at the Chantry Flats trailhead, and it is a three-mile trek out the Upper Winter Creek Trail, towards my cabin in the woods.

The trail consists of undulating, sometimes rocky, precarious terrain, with sheer cliff drops.  It is a technical single-track trail and boasts some of the most beautiful country in the Front Range.  My cabin is #138, one of the most remotely located cabins in Big Santa Anita Canyon.

On this day, Matt K3MAT joined me for a day of adventure.  We arrived around 8am and got under way.  The day was misty and cool, which was perfect for hiking.  Matt chronicled our journey through the attached photos, video clips, and 3D topographical real time map.  There is a variety of heavy, dense underbrush, and tall trees, which sometimes gives way revealing a most delicate collection of beautiful flowers and flowing streams.  You share the mountains with spiders, snakes, bears and many other creatures.  Adjacent to my cabin lies a freshwater stream which is where I get my water for overnight visits.  There are several other cabins around mine, and many times I am out there all alone, but sometimes I might have company.

This day, Matt & I did a day hike in, where we hung out for several hours, and had some lunch and did some groundskeeping before we headed back out in the afternoon.  As you can see in the photos, we encountered a black bear on the way out.  Even though it was brown in color, it was a California Black Bear.  Our friend allowed us to pass with no problem, and went back the way he came.

We hope everybody enjoys all the videos and photos, in an effort to share the day, and the cabin experience, with many across the PAPA System.

  1. What’s the history of the cabin?
I’m also curious as to the security of your vehicle leaving it at Chantry. I’ve stopped recreating on the ANF partly because of concerns about personal safety and vehicle break ins.

  2. For those of you who missed the Sept 1st Great Outdoors Net, you missed a real treat! The topic of the night was Steve discussing his cabin and his adventures that occurred there during the last ~50 years. Great discussions and lots of fun information! This article will give you a glimpse of the things we talked about on tonight’s Net.
