PAPA 8 Update

New PAPA System Feature: Palos Verdes Receiver

After a detailed analysis of the unique attributes of our Palos Verdes site, the Tech Team saw an opportunity to make better use of this location. In order to improve coverage in the Los Angeles basin and along the San Gabriel mountain foothills, the Tech Team has installed a new remote receiver at Palos Verdes.

This site, just like our Verdugo Peak site, is very different from our other repeater sites. It’s not actually a repeater. It’s just a receiver that shares the same input frequency of the PAPA 8 Mt. Wilson repeater. The Palos Verdes and Verdugo receivers have a different PL than the Mt. Wilson repeater receiver.

The Tech Team recommends that you program your radio as follows to take advantage of the coverage offered by Palos Verdes, Verdugo and Mount Wilson. This will set you up to transmit on the Palos Verdes or Verdugo Peak receiver inputs while still listening to the Mt. Wilson repeater output.

Providing reliable and complete UHF repeater coverage in Southern California isn’t easy. Your PAPA Tech Team is always looking for ways to fill-in underserved areas and strategically add new coverage when it’s warranted. A quick glance at the PAPA Repeater Page reveals how many repeaters your membership dollars support to this end.

Our network design philosophy contains many important pillars. First, all repeater sites have to be reliable. Our year-long upgrade program has made this a reality. Second, repeater sites must cover the geography where our members live and work. Third, on the whole, the coverage of repeaters should be complimentary to maintain service over a wide area in the event of a single site failure. And, finally, we recognize that most new hams enter the hobby with just a low cost HT, so we strive to provide a level of coverage that results in a positive user experience with just a modest station.
