All About SOTA – Virtual Meeting

PAPA Virtual Meeting Logo

Join us for a presentation on Summits on the Air – SOTA. As is the new-normal, this meeting will be done on Zoom! See below for Zoom info.

SOTA is a communications activity for radio amateurs which is based on portable operation from mountain peaks and hilltops around the world. All HF and VHF bands and modes may be used making it an ideal object for newly licensed and experienced hams. While SOTA usually involves hiking up to a high point or in some cases driving up, learn how you can participate from your home station.

The speaker will be Scott Hanley WA9STI who was first licensed as WN9STI at age 13 in Chicago. Communicating via amateur radio in the outdoors is one of Scott’s interests which includes using low power SSB and CW while camping, going to remote locations to work Field Day as a solo 1B operator, participating in the 2016 National Parks on the Air event, helping on the Baker to Vegas race, and hiking trails to set up his equipment on summits. Scott has operated SOTA from 221 peaks in 25 states to include Alaska and Hawaii and from Ireland. From his home QTH, he has communicated with over 2,850 hams on summits. Scott is a member of the Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) and the Los Angeles County Disaster Communications Service (DCS). He has been a PAPA member for 30 years.
