Our southern California 220 MHz band spectrum management organization, 220 SMA, has forwarded information on interference in the upper portion of our band, along with information on how you can file a complaint with the FCC. Read on for details.
To the members of 220 SMA, Trustees of Coordinated Repeaters and concerned 220 MHz band operators:
Over the past few months our spectrum has experienced heavy interference in the 223-224.9 MHz part of our band from FCC experimental licensed stations in the South Bay (Los Angeles) area with up to 10KW effective radiated power. The interference is typically about 1 second duration of radar pulses with a 3 to 3.5 second duration between the pulses. This has caused most repeaters with inputs in the high end of the band and simplex operation in the FM portion of the band to experience harmful interference blocking use of the repeater or simplex reception. Many thanks to Deane N5DQ who first noticed the signals and found the experimental licensee. Here are the details of their stations:
- Experimental station WP2XFD located in Hawthorne at coordinates 33-54-56N 118-19-53W TPO and ERP of 10KW, emission 1M90M8N (223-224.9 MHz)
- Experimental station WP2XGY located in Hermosa Beach coordinates 33-51-42N118-23-57W and TPO of 1KW, ERP 3.981KW, emission 1M90M8N (223-224.9 MHz)
Licensee: Chaos Capital, CEO and the party responsible listed on the licenses is Bo Marr, Chaos Capital, 310 Hermosa Ave, Hermosa Beach, CA 90254.
Phone (stop buzzer) Bo Marr: (310) 487-5616 or Daniel Tompson (405) 388-0692
License granted 11-16-24 for a two-year duration.
The Experimental Licenses clearly state that all operations are to be on a non-interference basis.
The licensee is also known as Chaos Industries, Inc. (https://www.chaosinc.com).
The purpose of the experiment is new RADAR development for air search and maritime for the USAF other military and civil aviation use. https://www.sbir.gov/awards/208953
If you would like to file a complaint with the FCC if you experienced interference, the link is:
https://consumercomplaints.fcc.gov/hc/en-us
Once filed, you will receive the reference number of your complaint. Based on complaints filed by LAC DCS, GRONK and possibly others, it is our understanding that the local FCC Office in Cerritos has taken action to shut down the two experimental stations. This is unconfirmed with our organization, so it may be of value to file a complaint so the FCC will have additional information relating to interference from the experimental stations. Please copy the 220SMA president John Hudson, WA6HYQ at
[email protected] so we can help track the process. Just a reminder, the 222-225MHz Amateur Radio Band is a Primary allocation.
