1970′ Revisited

Chris, AA4CD, gave a presentation on popular handheld VHF amateur radios of the 1970’s. This was a time when radios required two crystals per channel and features were few and far between. He showed the grail radio of the era, the Motorola HT-220, explaining the many different configurations the radio could have including multiple channels, PL, high power, and DTMF. Also included in the discussion was the SRC-146A from Standard Communications, an affordable six channel handheld from Wilson Electronics of Henderson, Nevada, and a rugged portable offering from Genave. A rare Heathkit VHF handheld was displayed. Typically, the Heathkit was built by the amateur and then returned to the factory for final alignment using bench grade test equipment. VHF Engineering also had a handheld radio in kit form during that time. He had examples of the earliest synthesized handhelds from Icom and Tempo which ushered in the 1980’s.
